Medical Writing

Westlink Business Solutions: a full-service creative agency specialising in medical writing.

Unlock the power of persuasive medical communication with Westlink Business Solutions Creative Agency, a unique blend of expert creativity in medical writing based in Johannesburg.

Medical writing is a complex umbrella topic. It refers to the process by which a science-savvy writer with the appropriate credentials transforms highly technical medical information into easily understandable information that the intended audience can consume.

Our Writers

A professional medical writer has an in-depth understanding of scientific terminology and concepts; and they are skilled in the translation of such information into different formats, and for different audiences.

Here at Westlink, our medical writers:

Understand the brief given to them

  1. Are research experts – the variety of knowledge niches enable our writers to know exactly where to find what they need for your brief
  2. Ensure that the information flows in a logical format
  3. Are meticulous in all the details of your brief and their delivery thereon
  4. Possess strong written communication skills that enable them to write for the level of understanding of your target audience(s)

As an organisation, Westlink Business Solutions has an intricate understanding of the ethical and legal aspects that apply to medical communication and publication; this understanding and the application thereof extends to our medical writers.

Our Process

  1. We understand the brief
“It’s more efficient to get to your destination when you know where you’re going and why you’re going there.”
Our medical writers dissect the instructions provided by our client to ensure that the final product meets their expectations.
  2. We mine the literature and review the information
“A plan is the process of putting order to chaos.”
Our medical writers know the value of meticulous planning related to literature mining. We construct our search strategy to be as targeted to the brief as possible; after which we group the information into relevant categories to structure the final product.
  3. We author and compile the written piece
“Writing, especially medical writing, is so much more than the act of putting words on a page.”
Our medical writers are experts at drafting written pieces for the various purposes that may be required to write for – writing Draft 1 is simple in this regard. Westlink Creative Solutions excels in working efficiently, so our medical writers are skilled at reducing revision time given their excellent language skills – they are also trained to follow the writing guidelines of our clients.
After writing Draft 1 and checking any appendices for correctness, our medical writers hand it over to our reviewers.
  4. We review and edit the written piece
“Only those who refuse to check for errors are subject to making them.”
Westlink Creative Solutions believes in excellence, and when it comes to communicating medical information, excellence isn’t an option – it’s a requirement. Our review process is intensive and thorough. At least three reviewers check the written piece for content correctness (cross-checking with source data), grammar, spelling, references, readability, comprehension, format, and adherence to client and industry guidelines.
  5. We apply the edits to the written piece
“The purpose of checking for errors is not to simply be aware of them, but to implement change.”
At this stage, all the changes that were noted in the review stage are edited in Draft 1. The time spent going back and forth between stages 4 and 5 can vary – only once there are no more errors found at the review stage, does the Westlink team proceed to stage 6.
  6. We submit the written piece for approval
“A project can only be classified as complete once it is submitted.”
Our team submits the Final Draft together with all supporting documentation to our client for approval.
  7. Client approves and signs off
“The evidence of a job well done is the approval that comes from it.”
Once our client approves the written piece, they sign off on it. Once this is done, the rights are officially handed over to our client to use as they see fit.

There are times when our clients might want something added, removed, or otherwise changed as a result of a strategy change on their side unaccounted for in the brief. This results in the written piece not being approved. In the spirit of collaborative excellence, Westlink Creative Solutions then goes back through the process from stage 4.
